Why is Spain a top destination for surf camps?

Spain offers surfers everything their heart desires: from endless sandy beaches and perfect waves to a rich culture and delicious cuisine. The variety of surfing opportunities along the Spanish coast and the pleasant climate make Spain one of the most popular surf camp destinations worldwide.

In the following sections, we will go into more detail about the best surf camp destinations in Spain and help you find the ideal surf camp for your next surf vacation.

Where can you surf in Spain?

Spain offers a wealth of surf camp destinations, ranging from the wild Atlantic coast in the north to the sunny beaches of the south. Here are some of the top regions that offer surfers unforgettable surf vacation experiences:

There are three regions in Spain where you can surf wonderfully: sunny Andalusia, rugged northern Spain and the Canary Islands. You'll find consistent swells everywhere, but Andalusia is our favorite. Because here you can find great waves almost all year round in a wonderfully mild climate. It's not without reason that we chose this magical corner of the world for our own surf camp in El Palmar.

  1. The Basque Country: Known for its vibrant culture and powerful waves, the Basque Country is a paradise for surfers. Places like Zarautz and Mundaka attract surfers from all over the world with their first-class surfing conditions.

  2. Cantabria and Asturias: These regions in the north of Spain offer a picturesque backdrop and a variety of surf spots for surfers of all levels. The beaches of Somo and Rodiles are particularly popular with surfers.

  3. The Canary Islands: Fuerteventura, as well as Tenerife and Lanzarote, are famous for their consistent waves, warm temperatures and relaxed atmosphere. The Canary Islands offer surfers ideal conditions for a surfing adventure all year round.

  4. The Costa de La Luz: In the south of Spain, in Andalusia, the Costa de la Luz attracts surfers from all over the world with its sunny beaches and gentle waves. Places such as El Palmar, as well as Tarifa and Cádiz, offer surf camps for all levels and are ideal for beginners and advanced surfers alike.

Advantages and disadvantages of surfing regions in Spain

Whether Andalusia, northern Spain or the Canary Islands, they all certainly have their advantages.

  • In northern Spain (Asturias, Cantabria, Galicia), you are particularly in the right place in high summer, i.e. in July and August. This is when you have the best chance of good weather. Spain's north is known for its harsh and cool climate.

  • The sunny south (Andalusia), on the other hand, with its 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, is quite similar to California's climate. Surfers find the best waves in Andalusia from September to June. During this time, the weather is usually a dream. It's not quite as hot as in summer and even in winter it's still mild T-shirt weather. It is also relaxed on the beach and in the water as Spanish holidaymakers concentrate on the peak summer months of July and August. We have even written our own blog post about the waves and climate in Andalusia: Surfing in Andalusia - When are the best waves?

  • The Canary Islands are actually good for surfing all year round too. Fuerteventura in particular, but Tenerife and Lanzarote are also good destinations for a surfing vacation. The flight time here is a lot longer than to the Spanish mainland.

Our tip: Surfing in Andalusia

As described above, there are some beautiful coasts in Spain that are perfect for surfing. We personally are in love with El Palmar, a coastal town in Andalusia. Andalusia's coastline consists of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. While the Mediterranean is rarely suitable for surfing, the waves on the Atlantic reliably roll onto the coast. El Palmar in particular has long since ceased to be an insider tip among surfers for its excellent waves. Nevertheless, everyone can find a relaxed peak at the 8 km long beach break without it being overcrowded. Beginners practise in the white water and the better surfers in the line-up. In recent years, more and more surf stores, surf schools, surf camps and restaurants have set up shop in this charming coastal town. You won't find any large hotels here, but you will find nice vacation homes, a campsite, pitches and, of course, surf camps.

Booking a surf camp in Spain requires careful planning and consideration to ensure you have the best surfing experience possible. Here are some key tips that can help you find and book the ideal surf camp:

Book early and plan for availability and discounts
Surf camps in Spain can book up quickly during peak season, so it's advisable to book early to secure the best accommodation and dates. Many surf camps also offer early booking discounts and special offers for bookings outside the high season, so it's worth keeping an eye on the deals and planning early.

Consider reviews and experiences of other surfers
Before you book a surf camp in Spain, you should take the time to research and read reviews and experiences of other surfers. Online platforms such as TripAdvisor, Google Reviews and surf forums can provide valuable insights and recommendations to help you choose the right surf camp. Look out for reviews on surf instructors, accommodation, food and the quality of surf lessons to ensure that the surf camp meets your expectations.

By taking these tips into consideration, you can ensure that you find the ideal surf camp in Spain and have an unforgettable surf vacation. In the next few sections, we'll help you find the perfect surf camp for your needs by taking a closer look at some of the best surf camp destinations in Spain.

Best time to go surfing in Spain
The best time to go surfing in Spain depends on various factors, including surf conditions, weather and your personal preferences. The best time to go surfing in Spain varies depending on your destination. Therefore, we have summarized here:

  • Andalusia: In Andalusia it is actually beautiful all year round. In July and August, however, it is quite crowded here in El Palmar and the waves are small to non-existent. That's why our surf camp is closed during this time. However, surf lessons can be booked at our surf school. The ideal time to travel is therefore from September to June. At this time, the waves are usually consistent and the weather is generally wonderful. We have created a separate blog post about waves and weather in Andalusia that presents each month.

  • Northern Spain: July/August is actually the perfect time to travel to northern Spain. Midsummer is the most likely time for good weather. The north is also not quite as crowded in summer as the south or the Canary Islands.

  • The Canary Islands: This mainly refers to Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Tenerife. These are mild all year round. They are also quite busy in summer, which is why most holidaymakers travel to the Canary Islands in winter. For surfers on Fuerteventura, it is also important that the trade winds do not flatten the waves in winter. The north shore works best with an easterly or southerly wind, which only occurs more regularly in the fall and winter, as the prevailing winds on Fuerteventura mainly come from the north.

Surf camp jobs in Spain

Living where others go on vacation, the sea always in front of you and the waves always in view. And the best thing, of course: surfing every day. What sounds like a dream doesn't have to remain one. With a job in a surf camp, you can combine your passion for surfing with work. Surf camps are regularly looking for surf instructors, team members, cooks, yoga instructors and other staff. You can find our vacancies under Jobs.
