Every month has its own advantages. When is the best time for you to travel to Andalusia depends entirely on which waves and weather you like. That's why we're introducing you to each month now - with the average wave height, water temperature, air temperature and our personal surf level recommendation.
The best time to travel to Andalusia is basically all year round. This is because the weather in Andalusia is very consistent and, above all, sunny. The weather in Andalusia is actually always nice. While in Germany the gloomy November is weighing on people's minds, Andalusia still has summer weather. Africa is only a few kilometers away, so the air temperature rarely drops below 15 degrees, even in winter. A surfing vacation in El Palmar is therefore the perfect way to escape a little winter depression. With 300 days of sunshine a year, the weather in Andalusia is almost always beautiful. Summer in El Palmar is warm and always pleasant thanks to the two prevailing winds, Levante and Poniente. Incidentally, the Levante gives us surfers our beloved offshore ;-)
In terms of weather and climate, El Palmar is ideal all year round. However, like everywhere else in Europe, July and August are very busy. This is when practically all of Europe is on vacation - including the Spanish. As there is also very little chance of waves during this time, our camp is closed during these months.
To give you a better overview of the waves, surfing conditions and climate in Andalusia, we have put together a climate table for you. Here you can see exactly which month offers which conditions and when is the best time to travel for your surfing vacation in the south of Spain. Now you're spoiled for choice. As you can see, the weather in Andalusia is always good.
When is the best time to surf in Andalusia? The answer is quite simple: you can always surf in Andalusia. Or almost always. Every month has its own great conditions. One month the waves are a little better, another month the air or water is warmer. Sometimes the waves are small and smooth - ideal for beginners - then there are months with bigger and more powerful waves. At this time, not only beginners but also advanced surfers and intermediates get their money's worth.
Basically speaking, the best time to surf in Andalusia is from September to June. This is because in summer (July, August) the chances of finding waves become increasingly rare, but the beaches are fuller. This is when the Spanish summer vacations take place and the crowds flock to the coast - to El Palmar to be precise. Summer is less about surfing and more about sunbathing. Of course, there can be a small swell now and again during this time. However, the beaches are now reserved for bathers and the surfing area is limited to a small zone. Our surf camp is therefore also closed during this time. Because we want to offer you the best conditions for surfing and learning to surf. Your surfing vacation should be unforgettable, relaxed and something very special.
The summer is ideal for swimmers and SUPs.
To help you plan your surfing vacation to Spain, we are now presenting each month individually. So you know exactly what wave sizes and air and water temperatures you can expect. All figures are of course average values from recent years. We can't give you a guarantee, but we can give you a trend from our more than 12 years of experience here in Andalusia.
Surfing in winter is also possible in Europe. And without a hood and booties. Because in Andalusia, it is wonderfully mild even in January and February. The sun shines almost every day here, so there's no chance of winter depression. Escape the winter blues and visit us in El Palmar!
January and February are the most consistent months in terms of waves. This is when you'll find the most consistent swell and you can surf not only El Palmar, but all the point breaks and reefs in the surrounding area. In winter, there are usually no people in the water, so you have the beach and waves almost to yourself. In our blog post about surfing in winter you can find even more information and pictures.

July and August are summer vacation months, even in Spain. This is the peak tourist season. The whole of Europe is on vacation, the air is hot and there are plenty of swimmers on the beach. The waves are usually very small and only ideal for beginners. Our surf camp is closed during this time. The big plus of summer: the water is usually warm now and you can surf in a bikini or board shorts.

Remember, remember, the swell of september... September is finally here again. The first clean fall swells roll in and the wave season starts again. The beaches are emptier than in summer, but the temperatures are still at the height of summer. The water is really warm (we've even been in the water in board shorts). The waves are usually 1 meter big, but there have also been really big waves in September.

In October, you have it all: the perfect combination of warm water temperatures, summer air temperatures and the best swell. Surfing in Andalusia in winter? Of course you can! Get into the line-up with you, because the waves in November and December are almost as consistent as in January and February. In winter, even advanced surfers will find waves that suit their level, as the waves can now be up to 2 meters big. You usually have plenty of space in the water in winter. From November to March, the beaches in El Palmar tend to be empty. You only meet a few locals with their dogs, otherwise you have the sea and beach to yourself.
In addition, it can still be really warm in November. In 2017, we even had 27 degrees in November. That's why now is the perfect time for a little winter escape - from Germany to Andalusia. The sun doesn't set until 18:30 in El Palmar, so you can enjoy long, sunny days in a T-shirt. Goodbye, winter blues.
Wave height: 1.5 - 2m
Surf level (suitable for): Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
New thickness: 3/2 - 4/3
Water: 17-19
Air temperature: 18-22 °C
Surfing in Andalusia means you'll always find a good wave. The great thing about surfing in El Palmar is that the coast here has two orientations:
Our home spot in El Palmar faces west.
The surf spots Canos de Meca and Barbate face south (in Canos you have offshore winds from the north)
These are perfect conditions, as you can surf here in almost any weather. If the waves in El Palmar are too big, you can be at a spot with smaller waves in 10 minutes. So you always have good conditions here.
We always find good waves for surf beginners, as we can switch to other surf spots on big days. Complete beginners surf with us in white water anyway and we always have it. So you can come to our surf camp to learn to surf all season long without any worries.
