The surf spot "Playa El Palmar" is our home beach. Our surf camp is also located here.
Playa El Palmar is the swell magnet in Andalusia. A west-facing beach break that mostly produces A-frame waves. This means that you can surf the waves on both the left and right at this surf spot.
The rocky substrate under the sand ensures that the sandbanks remain very stable and the waves break nicely. The character of the wave changes depending on the tide: at low tide it can be fast and hollow, while at high tide the waves tend to be flat and friendly. So there is something for every taste.
Just one town away is Conil. In our neighboring town you will also find a great surf spot with a beach break. There are right and left-hand waves that break relatively flat and are therefore very suitable for boards with more volume. You will have a lot of fun there, especially with a minimalibu, a fishboard or a longboard. This surf spot is usually at its best at low tide.
This surf spot is also another beach break. The biggest quality feature of this spot is the wind protection provided by the cliffs. The high rocks on the beach protect the waves from the wind, Levante. The east wind actually blows from a favorable direction and creates offshore wind. However, it can also be very strong at times. This is exactly when Cabo Roche is the perfect alternative spot. The surf spot works at almost all tide levels. However, the best tide always depends a little on how the sandbanks are lying at the time.
There are three excellent surf spots in Caños de Meca. The bottom here is a reef, so it is only suitable for beginners who already want to surf green waves and are no longer practising in white water.
Caños de Meca: Faro
Surfing in Spain with a longboard? The surf spot at the Trafalgar lighthouse is a real longboard spot and one of the highest quality surf spots in the area. The surf spot needs a little more wave because the beach is located on the south coast. So if it's too big in El Palmar, you can easily switch to Canos de Meca. On good days, the Righthander Pointbreak runs for around 200 - 300 meters - a mecca for longboarders! However, you will need a bit of paddle power, as the surf spot is a little further out. The best conditions are at low tide and with a northerly wind, as this brings offshore conditions with it. The surf spot runs over a reef, but the water is deep enough so that you don't have to worry about coming into contact with the bottom during a wipeout.
Caños de Meca: Marisucia
An Aframe wave breaks right next to Faro at this surf spot. This surf spot has a similar character to Faro and is also ideal for longboards or minimalibus. It is best to surf here at mid tide (and when the wave next door gets too crowded). In contrast to the neighboring wave, the surf level is a little lower. This means you get more waves. This surf spot is also very suitable for surf beginners who want to try out their first green waves.
Caños de Meca: Apartamentos
Apartamentos is also part of Canos de Meca. As the name suggests, this surf spot is located in front of the white apartments on the beach promenade. At this spot, you will find a beautiful left low-tide wave that is more suitable for advanced surfers. The wave breaks relatively steeply and in good conditions there is not much water over the reef. You are welcome to get your shortboard or fish out here. The take-off zone is small, so the line-up is quickly overcrowded. Nevertheless, you can have a really good session here, especially if you go surfing at this spot early in the morning. Because early in the morning you will find very few surfers in the water. The surf spot is located in front of the white houses ("Apartamentos").
This surfing spot is perfect when it's "blowing" everywhere else and it's too big to go into the water. Because then Punta Paloma starts to run. From a swell of around 3 meters, the so-called Righthander Pointbreak shows what it can do: A friendly wave with a pronounced channel that can produce long rides.
This surf spot is also located on the south coast. Barbate is a city beach. This surf spot is a beautiful beach break with plenty of space and is suitable for all surf levels. Incidentally, Barbate is our alternative spot when the waves in El Palmar are too big for our surf courses. The good thing about this spot is that you can see the waves from afar. This makes it easier to catch the green waves and is perfect for surfers who are still practising the right timing and positioning. The surf spot in Barbate is surfable at almost all tide levels, the preferred wind direction is again from the north.
If you want to conquer the surf spots in Andalusia on your own, think about a detailed surf spot check before you go into the water. In our blog post, we explain exactly how to do such a surf spot check.
